Businesses that generate and treat hazardous wastes are required to report the nature, volume, storage and treatment methods for all hazardous wastes generated by the business. All hazardous wastes must be disposed of at a permitted treatment, storage and disposal facility. Most hazardous wastes can be recycled or reused but some wastes must be burned in permitted incinerators or buried in special lined landfills.

Unified Program permits are required for hazardous waste generators and for the treatment of small volumes of specific hazardous wastes (tiered treatment permits) A Cal-EPA registration number is required for all hazardous waste generators.
